Talking College Lacrosse: Talking About Virginia
The national champion Virginia Cavaliers. Virginia had a year full of adversity, yet still found a way to find the holy grail of college lacrosse. Fighting a hungry Maryland team, they came out on top in the national championship this past May.
The Cavaliers lost their two super stars in Rhamel and Shamel Bratton, but the Cavs were able to win the national championship without them. Their playoff hero, Steele Stanwick, is back as a senior to man the attack in Virginia. Plus players like Matt Lovejoy and Frank Price.
Adam Ghitelman, the goaltender in Virginia, has moved on after his senior season ended with him coming out as a champion. The Cavaliers will have to change their style, which so relied on the outlet passes from Ghitelman out of the net. But the Cavs have been able to change their style before, as they showed when the Brattons were suspended in the 2011 playoffs.
Will the Cavaliers be able to contend for a championship this season, in a sparse but difficult ACC? They have not lost all too much, while top teams like Syracuse and Maryland may have lost more than they can handle. The Cavaliers still have Stanwick, one of the best players in the country.
Notes:
Virginia, at 13-5, finished with the third best record in the ACC behind Maryland and Duke. Both those teams should still be pretty good, but can the Cavs make the leap ahead of them this season?
Virginia did get hot last season, winning their last five, and they went 10-2 at home. What they will look to improve on this season is their 3-3 road record.
Don't forget about North Carolina in the ACC, who went 10-6.
