On the Record: MLL Commissioner David Gross
Last night on Lax Live Radio via The Lacrosse Radio Network, we were lucky enough to be joined by the commissioner of Major League Lacrosse, David Gross. He said some very interesting things about the future of MLL, so here is a little recap of all the important things happening in the world of Major League Lacrosse.
The first thing of interest was that MLL has another national TV deal that we will be seeing at some point soon. For this season there will be 14 games on CBS Sports and six on ESPN2. Then every other game will be on TV locally, most live and some on delay due to other programming. But there will now be another national TV for the 2013 season, but we do not know who yet. He said that Notre Dame lacrosse will be on NBC Sports Network this season so my random and unsupported guess is NBC.
Then there is the whole thing about expansion. Mr. Gross says that he is thrilled with the Hounds and Machine for this season, and he mentioned that they might look at San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta or Florida as potential markets. He also said that expanding has a lot to do with the right ownership groups, and the process might be going a little slower than expected. I asked him how the ownership process goes, and he said that they get inquiries every few days and do as much as they can with them.
He also reiterated that there will likely be no more expansion into Canada as long as there are so many potential American markets. He says that he expects Charlotte and Ohio to be two of the highest drawing teams in the league this season as well.
Certainly lots of stuff going on in the MLL world. What are your thoughts on the direction of the league?
