Cannons and Outlaws Jump On Group Coupon Bandwagon: Will It Work?
Boston Cannons and Denver Outlaws fans might be seeing a few lacrosse newbies in the stands in June and July, all thanks to the teams' partnerships with popular group coupon sites.
BuyWithMe's Boston area mailing list found an offer in their inboxes on Friday for Boston Cannons tickets at 50% off face value. The coupon allows fans to pay either $10 for a ticket to one of the last three Cannons home games of the season, or $20 for a ticket and a t-shirt. The deal, which expires on June 2nd, is labeled as being "on," code word for the offer having reached a minimum number of purchases.
The Cannons are not the first Major League Lacrosse team to delve into the world of group coupon offers - a industry growing at an exponential rate, with approximately 500 group buying sites launching in the past three years, according to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. The Denver Outlaws offered a deal with Living Social a few weeks back, offering a 53% discount on tickets to the team's home games at INVESCO Field (save for the Outlaws' always popular July 4th weekend game.) 1550 deals were purchased - enough to account for 15% of the attendance at an Outlaws' regular season game.
MLL teams aren't the first to attract new fans via group coupon deals. In fact, even two giant lacrosse markets found themselves taking advantage of this new "coupon culture" to push game tickets. Inside Lacrosse's Face Off Classic used a deal with the industry leader, Groupon, to sell 1,000 tickets to the popular March college tournament. Consumers received a 51% discount on the usually $35 ticket to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The Toronto Rock, the National Lacrosse League's recently crowned champions, sold tickets to their January games via Groupon Toronto in December. Offering 57% off face value at three different seating levels, the Rock sold 782 tickets.
Will jumping on the coattails of the group couponing trend boost pro lacrosse attendance this summer? Or will these fans be one-and-done's unless they can score another deal on tickets?

Add the Rattlers to that list as well. They offered half price tickets to all home games a couple of weeks ago.
