Cannons Fire Blank Shot, Get Licked by Lizards

"Bros, anybody care to lax?" (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

Editor's note: They did not get licked, Boston lost 12-11, it just made a better title.

This game was definitely full of scoring streaks. Boston started off with 5 goals, that was followed by 4 Long Island goals (one 2 pointer), then 4 Boston (one 2 pointer), 6 Long Island, and then a final Boston goal. I was unable to watch the game, but from everything I read, this was a very physical game with many swings of momentum (as the streaks indicate).

Star-divide

Looking at the box score, Boston just plain outplayed Long Island, but they fell short when time expired. Boston had more shots on goal, more ground balls won, and worked the ball around better to finish with 7 assists on 10 goals.

Boston Cannons

Rank Player Rating
1 Matt Poskay 6
2 Paul Rabil 5
3 Max Quinzani 3
4 Brian Farrell 2
5 Kevin Buchanan 2

Paul Rabil scored twice, once being a two pointer, and also added to the team with an assist. He had a ridiculous 18 total shots (12 on goal!). With a night that productive added to all of his previous games, I think Rabil has one of the better shots in the league at winning MVP. The only things that could bump him higher would be a night like Jeremy Boltus/Grant Catalino when they played a while back or if the Cannons get the first place seed for the playoffs.

Long Island Lizards

Rank Player Rating
1 Matt Danowski 5
2 Stephen Peyser 5
3 Tim Goettelmann 3
4 Jay Card 2
5 Adam Rand 1

If any player in this game could challenge Rabil for the MVP, look towards Danowski or Peyser who both had 2 pointers to help the Lizards win this game.

Shooters

Player Goals Shots on Goal Total Shots eS%
Matt Poskay 3 7 9 0.481
Stephen Peyser 2 3 5 0.480
Tim Goettelmann 2 6 7 0.449
Kevin Buchanan 1 2 5 0.240
John Grant Jr 1 3 6 0.222
Brad Ross 1 7 9 0.185
Paul Rabil 2 12 18 0.173
Stephen Berger 1 2 8 0.141
Matt Danowski 1 5 11 0.124

There is a good distribution of shooting accuracy by both teams, so I would say that Long Island got "lucky" with the win. I say "lucky" because it is mostly skill, they are a good team that put in a lot of work to win this game. The only thing that really stands out in the shooting table is Rabil's 18 shots. That is a lot!
