Major League Lacrosse Playoff Preview: Hamilton Nationals
The Hamilton Nationals have made the playoffs in their first season in Hamilton, but just by the skin of their teeth. Their last week win over the Long Island Lizards ensured a playoff spot and they will be taking on the Denver Outlaws. Hamilton makes the playoffs after finishing dead last in MLL last season (as Toronto), so the young team has a lot to learn. Can the Nationals win, and how will this young roster far?
Key Player: Casey Powell is the X factor for the MLL playoffs. He could make or break this game for the Nats. Jeremy Boltus, Joe Walters and Cody Jamieson have led the young team, but Powell has two games of action under his belt this season and with his experience, Powell could step up and lead this team to a championship. If Powell can pass the ball and get his shots, he can be an offensive force and like I said, an X factor. As long as he does not disrupt the young and hungry offense.
Key Stat: With just four two point field goals, the Nationals have the least in Major League Lacrosse. Not really the biggest deal other than the fact that Denver allows more (12) than anyone else. What gives? Or will the two point goal be a non factor in this game?
Advantage: While the Outlaws have experience, the Nationals are young and talented. With names like Stephen Keogh, Kevin Crowley, David Earl, Boltus and Jamieson, the Nationals have a bright future with the biggest young lacrosse stars in the league. This youthful energy could help the Nats
Disadvantage: Goaltending. Yes, Joe Marra, Scott Rodgers and Brett Queener have had good years, but none of them compare to Jesse Schwartzman in Denver. Also, who will start? Rodgers is expected to start, but the Outlaws have the advantage in the cage.
Prediction: Nationals win this. I've been on their wagon all season and I am not a believer in the Outlaws.
