Last year's NLL blockbusters: Tracey Kelusky
This is the second in a series of articles looking at the blockbuster trades of the 2010-2011 off-season. The first looked at Josh Sanderson moving to Boston.
The Deal
October 6, 2010 – Calgary sends Tracey Kelusky and a 3rd round pick in the 2011 entry draft to Buffalo for a first round pick in the 2011 entry draft.
Technically, we don't yet know the final results of this trade since picks in a future draft were also exchanged. For the purposes of this article let's assume that the players chosen in the upcoming drafts will turn out to be a wash or otherwise insignificant. This is a dangerous assumption considering one of the draft picks in the Josh Sanderson trade turned out to be Curtis Dickson, who was anything but insignificant in his rookie year, but it's the best we can do without waiting until the end of the season after the draft.
The Numbers
Nothing to compare. Buffalo was the recipient of Kelusky's 21 goals and 33 assists, while Calgary got nothing. The 2011 draft happens next month, but it won't be until the 2012 season until we see how the players chosen work out. However, that's not what this trade was about.
Other Factors
Calgary obviously lost this trade, but it was one they had to make. Kelusky was the Roughnecks captain and one of their top scorers for eight years, and led them to two Championships. When he moved back to his home town of Peterborough after years of living in Calgary, the Roughnecks decided that sending Tracey east was the right thing to do, and kudos to them for making this difficult decision. That said, I'm surprised they didn't get more from the Bandits for him, since it's not like they were trading a former star in the twilight of his career. Kelusky turns 36 next month and could easily have several more productive seasons left in him.
However Calgary does get a first round pick in next month's draft, so they could get something significant in return; time will tell.
The Winner: Buffalo
Next: One of the biggest trades in NLL history: John Grant heads to Colorado for Matt Vinc.

I also wouldn’t discount the ownership financial situation in Calgary as a factor leading to this move. One more player to move back and forth and one with a big ticket. I will say this, guys like Ranger and Shattler really filled in where needed.
I think the ownership had everything to do with this move.
