More New Rules Being Considered by the MLL

Consider allowing telescopic sticks. (Photo by Brad White/Getty Images)

MLL co-founder Jake Steinfeld said during the MLL Championship game that the league was investigating the possibility of having lights on the lacrosse sticks to indicate who has the ball. Of course, most leagues are constantly looking to improve themselves, and Steinfeld didn't list all of the potential changes they are investigating:

  • Apart from the bigger stick, it's too hard for spectators to tell the goalie apart from the other players. Starting next season, the goalie will wear a rotating red light on top of his helmet.
  • The "really-long pole". One player on each team can use a 20-foot stick. An additional rule would need to be added to disallow pole vaulting over defenders.
  • Double the action by having two balls in play at the same time.
  • A trapezoid shape would be created behind the net. This would affect the goalie's play in some way, though the exact details are yet to be determined. It would likely be similar to the NHL rules for its trapezoid, assuming anyone figures them out.
  • More concentric circles would be added beyond the two-point line, creating the three-point line, the four-point line, and so on. If a goalie scores on the opposing net, the game is immediately over and he gets the Golden Snitch.
  • The league is considering creating a new version of the game, but played indoors on a much smaller playing surface. "We haven't come up with a name for this revolutionary new sport yet," said Steinfeld, "so we'll have to do some thinking outside the box."
  • The offside rule is too confusing for new fans, so scrap it. In an unrelated story, the MLL will introduce a new award: "Cherry-picker of the Year".
  • Make the "Air Gait" play more exciting by placing a springboard behind the net. Add style points for flips.
  • The pocket mesh will be made of elastic rather than string. Pulling the elastic back and letting it go like a slingshot is allowed.

Disallow Pole Vaulting?!?!?!

Seriously? Put in a trampoline behind the net to help with “Air Gait” goals, but no pole vaulting? Besides that, I fail to see why fans won’t be flocking to fields this year.

Remember, as my lacrosse coach use to tell us on the field, always keep your head up, and your feet moving forward.
