Georgia Might be Getting NCAA Lacrosse
OnlineAthens.com and lacrosseplayground.com is reporting that we might see the university of Georgia start a lacrosse program. Greg McGarity was named Athletic director a year ago, the same Greg McGarity that pushed for a women's lacrosse program in Florida. We might be seeing a similar thing going on in Georgia.
From Lacrosse Playground:
“Sometime over the next three or four years, we will more than likely add another women’s sport,” the Bulldogs athletic director told a crowd at an Atlanta speaking engagement earlier this summer. “That’s something we’re going to have to add.”
Georgia hasn’t added a new sports team in a decade — since women’s equestrian became the 21st Bulldogs program in 2001. That sport is not yet sponsored by the NCAA, but the program has won national titles.
McGarity told the group that women’s lacrosse is a personal favorite, but later said in an interview that an internal committee would be formed in the future to review possible sports to consider.
This would be a sport that could be considered, seeing Vanderbilt and Florida already have programs. It was mentioned that Rugby or field hockey could also be options, but this is on the back burner and not the front of the radar right now.
In the past seven years, 25 schools with girls lacrosse programs grew to 58, so the sport is growing in the Georgia area. To get more lax recognition in the SEC would be pretty big, so we should keep our fingers crossed and hope this happens.
