NLL Week Three: Our Three Stars Of The Week
With another week down in the National Lacrosse League season, we saw our first overtime games of the year with the Philadelphia Wings defeating the Washington Stealth and the Colorado Mammoth defeating the Calgary Roughnecks. So, does a overtime game winning goal get someone the first star. Unfortunately, no, but it does get someone on the list.
3.) Kevin Crowley - Philadelphia Wings
Kevin Crowley had his best game in his short NLL career against the Washington Stealth. He had five goals on the night and is the team's leading scorer with eight goals on the season, two more than Drew Westervelt and seven more than Dan Dawson.
So, while a five goal night is impressive, what makes it even sweeter is the game winning goal that Crowley had in overtime. Just five minutes into the overtime period, Crowley was able to get the ball from Dan Dawson and was able to beat Tyler Richards for the goal.
2.) Brandon Miller - Philadelphia Wings
One week after getting absolutely shellacked against the Rochester Knighthawks, Brandon Miller put on a fantastic performance to give the Wings their 10-9 victory. Miller made 49 saves on 58 shots and kept the Stealth's biggest scorers: Paul Rabil, Rhys Ruch, and Lewis Ratcliff, to just two goals on the night. Thankfully for Miller, the Wings offense was able to pull out a win for him, scoring that one extra goal.
1.) John Grant Jr. - Colorado Mammoth
So how does a player top a game winning overtime goal and a 49 save performance for the first star? By scoring 9 goals and 19 total points over two games, scoring a game winning goal with 14.5 seconds left, and getting his 1,000th career point in the process.
Grant had a fantastic weekend in Alberta which started with a five goal, four assist night in Edmonton. Grant's final goal of the game was the dagger through the heart of the Rush fans as well, as he was able to find the back of the net with 14.5 seconds left to give the Mammoth a 13-12 victory.
The next night, Grant continued on his hot streak, contributing to the Mammoth's first six goals and getting his 1,000th career point on an assist in the first quarter. Grant had an assist on the overtime goal by Gavin Prout and finished the night with four goals and six assists. Grant now has the league lead in goals, assists, and points with 13 goals and 17 assists on the season through three games. He is averaging 10 points/game, a full two points/game behind John Tavares. By the end of this season, he may be able to pass Josh Sanderson for fourth on the all-time career points list. Grant has 1,007 and Sanderson has 1,022 at the moment.
