Anthony Cosmo vs Mike Thompson: Career Comparison
Anthony Cosmo is obviously going to be the Buffalo Bandits' starting goaltender. If he wasn't going to be, then the Bandits would not have given two first round picks to the Minnesota Swarm for his services. However, some people are wondering if Mike Thompson is still the better fit in Buffalo.
The Bandits have struggled their past four games, and Thompson is not immune to that. But still, Thompson was one of the best goalies in the NLL last season. He has won a championship, while Cosmo has never won an NLL playoff game, despite his Mann Cup in Brampton this summer. Let's take a career comparison.
Cosmo started his career as a four year back up to Bob Watson with the Toronto Rock. He would be traded to the San Jose Stealth in a six player deal and he became the Stealth's starting goalie and was the western conference's all star game starter twice.
Cosmo would be traded to the Chicago Shamrox for fellow goalie Matt Roik, but they dispersed and he ended up with the Boston Blazers. He found moderate success there, but never won a playoff game in three appearances. When Boston folded, the Minnesota Swarm drafted him, but he did not report, thus his trade to Buffalo. He has won two Mann Cups with the Victoria Shamrocks and the Brampton Excelsiors.
Thompson came up with the Ottawa Rebel in 2001, and began his Bandits career in 2007. He became the starting goalie when regular starter Steve Dietrich got injured. Thompson, in 2008 along with platoon goalie Ken Montour, led the Bandits to the NLL Champions Cup.
Thompson has been the Bandits starter ever since then, with his most minutes at 763 in 2011. He went into this season as the starter without Ken Montour, but now he will be playing second fiddle to Cosmo.
