For Washington Stealth, Shooting Percentage is Key
The Washington Stealth made one of the biggest moves of their season this week, trading away Paul Rabil for Athan Iannucci. Iannucci scored one goal on five shots in the Stealth's loss to the Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday.
The biggest issue with the Stealth this season has been the two man show of Lewis Ratcliff and Rhys Duch. The pair played pretty well this past week, but had 26 of the team's 62 shots. The Stealth also have one of the lowest shooting percentages in the NLL.
The acquisition of Iannucci has been questioned because he likes to shoot the ball, something that Ratcliff and Duch will not likely give up. But maybe having that presence who can shoot the ball and get it in the net can help. Iannucci was either going to disrupt an already struggling shooting percentage, or he would help improve it.
Ratcliff leads the NLL with 85 shots and Rhys Duch is third with 69 shots. Ratcliff has 14 goals on 85 shots. Duch has 14 goals on 69 shots. Ratcliff has a shooting percentage of 12%. Ratcliff's 85 shots on goal are 12 higher than John Grant's 73, which are second in the league.
The question is, as stated above; can the Stealth get their overall shooting percentage higher? On the season they have 10, 9, 5, 11, 11 and 12 goals. That is 58 goals, which is the second worst in the NLL, only behind Edmonton. So if they are shooting the ball, what do they need to do to get their shooting percentage up for that to equate in goals?
Do they need to distribute the ball more? Does Iannucci help that, or does he hurt that? Leave your thoughts in the comments and vote on the poll.
